Retail: Day in my Life Working In A Clothing Store
Everyone’s day is never the same and it’s always different no matter what’s going on. Some people could be out hanging with friends. Others may be staying home watching a series on Netflix. As for mine, my current chapter in my life right now is being able to work in retail, clothing store to be precise. I spend most of my day/week at work working and enjoying the ups and downs that comes along with it.
Funny enough as I’m writing this blog post, I had just got out of the shower after a very short, slow closing shift at my job. It was a good night indeed and I’ll be off the following day. I wanted to share what a typical day in my life is like working at a clothing store.
I absolutely love these posts, especially with how you can take a glimpse into how one person lives. Being able to take to you all along with me is something that, I don’t know, feels very heartfelt and personal. Oddly like those jobs where you could “bring your kid to work.” There’s this layer of comfort and curiosity that sits amidst inside that one day you get to see when someone brings you along.
I would love to do a lot of these types of posts. Even if they aren’t about me working but how I live in general. My life may be pretty inspiring to someone while others might find it relaxing. In any case as to how my content is perceived, it’s definitely a pleasure to share something that makes me very happy to create!
What Part of Retail and Job Description
Getting back on the topic on this post, I’ll be sharing what it’s like for me working in retail. To help visualize the picture, I’ll first go into depth about what exactly I do and then everything else will make sense.
My role in my job is a sales associate and I’m trained in pretty much all the departments we offer. From being a cashier, processing returns, organizing and recovering, and even packing orders, I do it all and I love it. I’ve grown to see that I’m a person who doesn’t mind being at one job for a while. If I can be flexible in my role and do different things every other day, I’m content with just doing that.
The hours are very nice and convenient. They give me that opportunity to still be at home and enjoy that time to myself. Some days I go in could be for four hours while others can be seven to eight. There’s also an opening shift and a closing one, so it’s easy to plan my day according to either shift I’m working.
That’s a little bit of what I do, so I do hope you enjoy reading about my day working in retail! Hopefully you’ll be very surprised at how a clothing store works just like how I was.
Work Morning Routine
First things first, I wake up everyday around 6am to help my mom with my younger siblings. As they get ready for school, I do tend to help pack their lunches. It’s something I enjoy doing and I get to ride with her to drop them off. We’ve been doing this for as long as I could remember. She as well as I enjoy those small morning talks back home.
Once they are back home, we either chill out to relax or make some tea to sip on. We talk some more and then around 8:45am, that’s when I prepare to head for work. I shower, get my clothes on, do my hair as well as makeup, and head to work.

Clocking Into Shift
The day I documented, I worked in fulfillment, which would be packing orders to ship out. I didn’t necessarily take a lot to work with me today, especially since it was a short shift and not much is needed from me. I did write a post where I share what I take in my bag as I go to work.
My shift started at 10:00am, one hour before the store opened and I clocked in to head downstairs. It’s pretty nice being able to be on the floor with no customers and it makes finding the items to ship much faster. There were about 64 picks and they had to get done before I clocked out. It may sound like a lot but it truly wasn’t!
Work in Progress
Because I’ve gotten used to finding where the items are, I usually have about 30 to 40 items picked. There’s still plenty of time to look for the remaining ones. My other coworkers begin coming in and once 11am comes, that’s when the store opens!
There’s that wave of customers that comes in to get things done early. I mean, I don’t blame them because they can go back home or tackle the rest of their daily errands. Once they come in and head out, the building gets quiet but its waves of crowds come and go.
By then, it’s around 11:53am and I begin packing orders. There’s two types of orders I pack, the first one is for the people doing in-store pickup and the other is to be shipped. It’s nice being able to be someone’s personal shopper in a clothing store because I get to see what’s really on the floor.
I scan the item, print the label, pack into a bag, and put the package in its designated corresponding area. This can be a very fast process or a very slow one depending on how many orders there are. It’s definitely relaxing and rewarding, especially to be off the floor and to do my own thing.
From Packing to Loading Dock
Once I finish packing all the orders and making sure nothing else comes in, I load everything into a shipment bag. It’s a big bag that has the postal service’s label on it. They come whatever time during my shift or after to pick up the bag to mail it off.
It’s that simple! Now usually after I finish, there’s time where more orders come in and I have to go get those. With how the influx of orders have been, I don’t get to take the shipment until the end of my shift. Sometimes the ones that come in may be more tedious to pack, such as salon products because they have their own packaging.
Recovery, Then Clock Out
This particular day, there was about forty minutes left in my shift and it was slow. I decided to help recover, which means to make the store look nice, for the remainder of my time. Recovery is my favorite thing now because I love cleaning and organizing. It’s more or less making the store look very neat and tidy so when customers come in, it doesn’t look chaotic.
The area I did that I was so proud of was the Levi jean wall. Our store has these beautiful wooden, industrial looking shelves they sit on. There are so many jeans, except I love the task because believe it or not, it’s more of an eyesore than you think.
Here’s what it looked like after I was with the entire shelf! Gosh, I was proud and a bit jealous because the area simply was a little too nice.

Once 2:00pm hit, I head upstairs, clock out, and head towards the mall. While waiting for my mom to pick me up, I enjoy walking out to see what’s new in stores. That’s one of the benefits of working in a clothing store because I get to windowshop. From smelling candles, looking at other store’s new merchandise, and even books, it helps me wind down a bit after a day’s work.
Rest of Day After Getting Home
My favorite part of a work day is being able to come back home. Yes, a very oxymoron, but I like that my shifts are very short and it gives me the rest of the day to myself. I’m not one who enjoys being out that much, only if it’s errands with my family or early morning runs. It gets pretty crowded where I live and it’s hard to take your time to look at things without feeling like I’m in the way.
Anywho, once I get home, I decompress from work by showering, sitting down for a bit, and enjoying some quiet time. I either play some video games, like minecraft or genshin impact, or simply watch something on a streaming service.
Once I helped around the house, my family and I had instant ramen for dinner. I made one called Jajangmyeon, or black bean noodles, with potstickers and kimchi. It’s very quick and easy to make as well as convenient after working. I hit the hay and close out my day as I prepare for tomorrow.

Thank you for Reading My Day!
I can’t believe I wrote an entire post about how I spend a day working in a clothing store! This truly made me so happy to write because watching vlogs of these inspires me a lot. I know my shift was very short and not much, but that’s what my day is typically like working as a part time worker.
If you did enjoy reading this post, I appreciate you making it to the very end. Thank you for hanging around with me and there’s a lot of other content like this I’m sure you’ll love. Take care and be sure to have a great day/evening!
