Why I Love Wearing My Black Trousers

Recently, I found out how much I absolutely love my black trousers. They are the one pair of pants I keep in rotation, whether thatโ€™s going to work or spending time with family. Those pants have become part of who I am and itโ€™s giving me small hints of my sense of style.

I first got these pants when I switched jobs and the dress code was business casual. My job that I still work at now is a department retail store and the uniform is black or blue bottoms. Plus, at the time, the part of the store I was working in was beauty and it was all black from head to toe. Knowing me, that color or darker tones looks better on me, so I stopped by H&M to buy some pants for this new chapter of mine.

When I was in the fitting room, Iโ€™ve never been so in love with something I tried on. Something I didnโ€™t think Iโ€™d like, especially since the style of pants were not in my wardrobe up until now. My bottoms I had in rotation were always skinny jeans or baggy sweatpants.

Ever since then, those pairs of pants have inspired me all the way to even becoming obsessed with wide leg jeans. No matter how many pieces of clothing Iโ€™ve bought over the years, my black trousers are the one I tend to reach for.

I Always Reach for the Same Pair

As I mentioned above, my black trousers have become so universal no matter what Iโ€™m doing. Whether itโ€™s working a short shift at work or strolling in the book store, I didnโ€™t realize how much Iโ€™m always in them.

Oddly, itโ€™s kind of like my uniform at this point! The only thing I change is what top or jacket Iโ€™m wearing and my style is slowly becoming me. Even if Iโ€™m wanting to be comfortable one day, walking around in flowy, tailored pants with a nice sweater always gets the job done.

Itโ€™s also not because I have to wear them, but because I simply enjoy and love wearing them!

Maybe Iโ€™m Finally Realizing My Style

My old style when I was in my teenage years reflected what was either easy or what I saw online. Oversized hoodies and leggings or baggy sweatpants with the matching sweatshirt. Now donโ€™t get me wrong, I still love a good matching set.But now as  Iโ€™m getting older, Iโ€™m becoming more aware of my personal style and who I am as Iโ€™m adulting.

Even when I watched shows when I was younger, I noticed how each character had their own style. Joey from Dawsonโ€™s Creek or the women in the show Dynasty (1981). As well as many others I watched all say who they were. It inspired me a lot and now that Iโ€™m older, I realized how much something a little as clothes define who you are.

Itโ€™s also not about trends or anything, because I have fallen in love with many aesthetics that I thought fit me. The more I experience or try out clothes I thought Iโ€™d like, the more and more I realize the difference between something trendy and whatโ€™s an actual style.

Dressing Like Myself and Who Iโ€™m Becoming

When I was younger, I wore a lot of skin-tight clothes and many things that insinuated my body. Wearing lots of denim and showing a lot of skin was what my appearance consisted of. Growing up, Iโ€™ve grown more fonder to wanting more comfort for myself. Wanting to wear things with more movement and showcasing more of a softer silhouette for myself.

Itโ€™s something about feeling more put together without having that sense of me being restricted. Not only did the pants inspire me to see what possible outfits I can create, but what opportunities other articles of clothes can do. Itโ€™s like being able to finally understand what I like instead of trying to figure out what everyone else will like.

I recently bought a couple of dresses I wear. I donโ€™t know why but I feel so girly when I wear them!

The woman Iโ€™m evolving to become starts with little things like this to help understand what I like. Younger me didnโ€™t wear or wouldnโ€™t have given those pieces a chance and my mindset has changed since then. Iโ€™m seeing that the more and more Iโ€™m curious, the more itโ€™s defining my personal style and I can go shopping from there!

Learning How to Build a Wardrobe Rather Than Simply Buying

I learned recently that as an adult, you might have to do some waiting before you can buy. My family and I went to Homegoods and learned that I have to be more mindful with my decision making. That same ideology goes towards my wardrobe, especially at a good time now that Iโ€™ve gone through and donated clothes I canโ€™t fit anymore.

Having less clothes now showed me that you can make many outfits out of a few pieces. With me practicing rotating between my jeans and trousers, I saw how a wardrobe can be very flexible. I used to have the urge to spend $300 on a haul of clothes when I was young. Sometimes Iโ€™d add clothes if I liked it but didnโ€™t have the perspective now if they were practical or not.

Knowing that right now Iโ€™m working and I spend most of my time at home, yes matching sets are appropriate along with having work clothes. The difference is that older me now longs for loungewear rather than just a sweatsuit set. Buying clothes for me now is paying more attention to my usage and quality instead of how many pieces I have.

Wardrobes take time and Iโ€™m finally understanding it the more and more I enjoy the pieces of clothes I love.

It All Started With the Pair of Trousers

Looking back, itโ€™s still so crazy how I thought this started with one pair of pants. When it first started out with just buying what I needed for work, it slowly turned into discovering a small piece of myself.

Iโ€™m learning that a personal style doesnโ€™t happen overnight, but with tiny things thatโ€™ll help inspire our wardrobe. I’m growing up, which means Iโ€™m changing, which I didnโ€™t realize until now when I noticed what I kept reaching for. Realizing the one piece I kept reaching for again and again and again was quietly showing me that was a part of my style.

And for me?

It all started with one pair of trousers!

Iโ€™ll be back next time to showcase more about how my lifeโ€™s been lately. Until next time, take care!

LOVE, MYA
